Prioritizing Women's Economic Empowerment

At MCC, we've worked to ensure the inclusion of women in our programs since our founding 17 years ago. Helping achieve gender equality is a cornerstone of our mission to reduce poverty through economic growth. Continuing this tradition, a webinar on March 8, International Women's Day, tackled the question of how our ongoing women's economic empowerment investments contribute to this mission. On March 30th, Sierra Leone completed a $44.4 million threshold program, ending a partnership that helped reform the country's electricity and water sectors, including the construction of 10 water kiosks that will supply safe water to 15,000 residents.

MCC's Board of Directors met today, discussing the agency's current investment portfolio as well as its 2021 strategic direction. This was the first meeting for the new Board Chair, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. 
Since 2004, MCC has invested $2.2 billion in clean water, sanitation, and natural resource improvement projects in partner countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Learn about how MCC is partnering to bring clean water to those in need.  
Our partnership with #Morocco is focusing on improving rural incomes by providing farmers like Jamila Ben Alioua and her family with secure rights to the collective land they have been farming for generations, as well as agricultural services like irrigation, access to credit and entrepreneurial support.

Between 2017 and 2018, the Data Zetu ("our data" in Swahili) project helped an array of organizations across Tanzania make better use of data to foster responsive, data-informed decision making for improved health and HIV/AIDS resilience.

USAID's Power Africa Partners Week, April 12-15
An annual meeting that brings together all of USAID's Power Africa's public and private partners. This year's meeting focuses on "Building Ecosystems for Energy Prosperity." On Thursday April 15, Deputy CEO Alexia Latortue will provide keynote remarks focused on MCC's energy portfolio, upcoming procurement opportunities, and MCC's climate and blended finance priorities. 
 
On Monday, April 12, Principal Deputy Vice President for Compact Operations Kyeh Kim will give opening remarks addressing MCC's power portfolio in West Africa for a technical session that will focus on energy opportunities. MCC's Practice Lead and Senior Director for Energy Sam Kwon will then present upcoming opportunities for the private sector to work in and around MCC's energy projects in West Africa.  
 
Montreal Chamber of Commerce Webinar, April 21 
The Montreal Chamber of Commerce will host a webinar on how to work with MCC. This is an opportunity for firms to discover how MCC selects partner countries, develops, and implements projects around the world. Participants will also learn basic steps for pursuing and bidding on MCC projects and gain insight on current and upcoming MCC compacts and threshold programs.
