1902: Conversational candies with printed words on them, created in 1866, are released in a new heart shape.
1906-07:American Greetings is founded, eventually competing with Whitney -- a company that acquired New England Valentine's Company.
1910-13: Florists's Telegraph Delivery opens, allowing people to order and schedule deliveries for Valentine's Day flowers. Shortly after, Hallmark produced its first Valentine's card.
1948: The De Beers diamond company launches its "A Diamond is Forever" campaign, sending the message that gifting high-end jewelry can be used as an expression of love.
1986: Hershey's begins packaging Kisses candies, invented in 1907, in pink and red foil for Valentine's Day.
2004-05: Companies amp up their digital and video tactics for Valentine's Day. In 2004, Chanel launches a high-budget No. 5 perfume commercial inspired by classic romantic films.
Then, YouTube -- which originated as an online dating site -- makes its debut on Valentine's Day 2005. Co-founder Steve Chen still credits its invention as the brainchild of "three guys on Valentine's Day that had nothing to do."
2010-Present: Valentine's Day marketing goes digital with an emphasis on online platforms and social media promotions, making this holiday even more accessible to small business marketers.
